Emergency HIV Prevention

PEP at HOP Medical Centre

PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a 28-day course of antiretroviral medication taken after a potential HIV exposure. It must be started within 72 hours — the sooner it begins, the more effective it is.

Start Within 72 Hours

Every hour counts. PEP effectiveness decreases with time — same-day initiation gives the best outcome.

28-Day Medication Course

Once-daily fixed-dose combination tablet. Side effects are generally mild and resolve within the first week.

Follow-Up HIV Test Included

HIV Rapid Test or HIV Lab-Based Test at 4–6 weeks post-PEP. HIV Rapid Test: results in 30 minutes to 2 hours (S$139.52 incl. GST). HIV Lab-Based Test: results in 2–5 working days (S$54.50 incl. GST). Final confirmatory test at 3 months. Transition to PrEP if ongoing risk.

⚠️ PEP is for emergency use after isolated high-risk exposures — not a substitute for regular HIV prevention. If you are at ongoing risk, speak to your doctor about PrEP.

What Is HIV PrEP?

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a daily pill that reduces HIV acquisition risk by up to 99% — for those at ongoing risk.

How It Works

PrEP is a once-daily pill. Taken consistently, it builds up in the body to block HIV from taking hold — even if you are exposed to the virus. Think of it as a daily shield.

Up to 99% Effective

Large-scale international research confirmed near-complete protection against HIV with consistent daily use — making PrEP one of the most effective preventions available today.

PrEP in the Pocket

'PrEP in the Pocket' refers to carrying HIV PrEP medication on you for on-demand use around the time of sexual exposure to help reduce the risk of HIV infection. This can be useful for select individuals as a form of HIV prevention. It should be used under medical guidance.

Need an HIV test before starting PrEP?

PrEP can only be started after confirming HIV-negative status. HIV Lab-Based Test from S$54.50 incl. GST (results in 2–5 working days) or HIV Rapid Test from S$139.52 incl. GST (results in 30 minutes to 2 hours).

Long-Term Care

HIV Treatment & Long-Term Management

A positive HIV diagnosis is not the end of your story — it is the beginning of a treatment journey. With modern medication, people living with HIV live full, healthy, normal lives. U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable) means that with treatment, you cannot pass HIV to a partner during sex.

Antiretroviral Therapy (ART)

A single tablet, taken once a day, keeps HIV suppressed to levels too low to measure. Most people feel no different from anyone else within a few months of starting treatment.

Viral Load Monitoring

Every 3–6 months, a simple blood test checks that your medication is working and your immune system is healthy. HIV Rapid Test and HIV Lab-Based Test available at HOP — results from 30 minutes to 2–5 working days. Your doctor monitors your overall health — not just the HIV.

Counselling & Support

Empathetic, non-judgmental support for disclosure, relationships, mental health, and stigma — treating you as a whole person.

HIV PEP (Emergency)

PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is an emergency 28-day course of antiretroviral medication taken after a potential HIV exposure to prevent the virus from establishing a systemic infection. It is indicated for individuals who have had a high-risk potential exposure — such as unprotected receptive anal or vaginal sex with a partner of unknown or positive HIV status, sharing needles, or occupational needle-stick injuries. It must be started within 72 hours; earlier is always better.
